There are nights when an adventure doesn’t require a summit, a long trail or an expensive journey somewhere far away. Sometimes all you really need is a quiet place away from the city lights, something warm to wear, a flask of coffee and enough patience to sit beneath the stars for a while.
The night of 12–13 August 2026 could be one of those nights.
Hey adventure seekers!
August has always been a great time to spend an evening outdoors. The days are still long, the nights are usually a little more comfortable than during the colder months, and once the last walkers disappear from the trails, the countryside takes on a completely different character. Familiar hills become silhouettes, distant villages glow beneath the horizon and, slowly, the stars begin appearing overhead.
This year there is an especially good reason to stay outside after sunset because two astronomical events arrive almost back-to-back. During the evening of 12 August, observers across the UK will be able to see an impressive partial solar eclipse. Then, only a few hours later, the Perseid meteor shower reaches its annual peak.
Even better, the Moon will be almost completely out of the way.
The Perseids peak around a New Moon this year, which means there will be very little natural moonlight washing out the darker parts of the sky. For anyone hoping to spend a night watching meteors, these are about as good conditions as we could reasonably ask for.
So if the famously reliable British weather decides to cooperate for once, this could become one of the best night-sky adventures of the year.
An Eclipse Before the Meteors
The evening begins with the Moon passing between the Earth and the Sun.
From Britain we won’t experience totality, but the eclipse will still be impressive. In London, around ninety percent of the Sun will be covered, while parts of western Britain and Ireland should see even greater coverage. It will be one of the most significant solar eclipses visible from the UK in decades.
The eclipse begins during the early evening, reaches its maximum shortly after 7pm and finishes close to sunset, although exact timings will vary depending on where you are in the country.
That creates a rather beautiful opportunity if you are willing to make a proper evening of it.
Find your location before sunset, settle down somewhere with a clear western horizon and watch the Moon slowly move across the face of the Sun. Then, as the eclipse finishes and the Sun disappears below the horizon, simply stay where you are.
Let daylight fade.
Let your eyes adjust.
Have something to eat.
Make a coffee.
And wait for the second part of the show.
There is one important thing I have to mention here, because this is one of those situations where being adventurous does not mean being careless. Never look directly at the Sun without proper solar protection. Ordinary sunglasses are not sufficient. You need certified eclipse glasses or properly filtered astronomical equipment. The same applies if you are planning to photograph the eclipse with a camera, binoculars or telescope.
Your camera can be replaced.
Your eyesight cannot.
Then the Perseids Take Over
Once darkness properly arrives, the Perseid meteor shower becomes the main attraction.
The Perseids return every summer as the Earth passes through a trail of dust and small fragments left behind by Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. Those fragments enter our atmosphere at tremendous speed and burn up high above us, creating the bright streaks of light we commonly call shooting stars.
They are not actually stars falling from the sky, of course.
Thankfully.
That would make the evening considerably more exciting than any of us had planned.
The Perseids are active for several weeks during July and August, but the main peak arrives around the night of 12–13 August. Under perfect dark-sky conditions, theoretical meteor rates can approach a hundred or more per hour, although the number you personally see will depend on cloud cover, light pollution, your location and how much of the sky is visible.
And this is one of the things I love most about meteor showers: you don’t need complicated equipment to enjoy them.
In fact, a telescope can actually make things worse.
A telescope shows you a tiny piece of sky, while meteors can appear almost anywhere above you. The Perseids seem to originate from a point in the constellation Perseus, known as the radiant, but you certainly don’t need to spend the night staring directly at it.
Your best equipment is something you already own.
Your eyes.
Find somewhere with a wide, unobstructed view of the sky, get comfortable and look up.
It can take twenty or thirty minutes for your eyes to become properly adapted to darkness, so resist the temptation to keep checking your phone. Every time you blast your eyes with a bright screen, you undo much of that adaptation.
Put the phone away if you can.
The messages will still be there in the morning.
The meteor you miss while checking them might not be.
Where and When to Watch in the UK
For observers in Britain, the best conditions should generally come after midnight and continue into the early hours of the morning. As the night progresses, Perseus rises higher in the sky and the number of visible meteors usually improves.
You don’t necessarily have to stay outside until five in the morning, though. Even spending an hour beneath a genuinely dark sky can be worthwhile.
The biggest difference will often come from your location.
Bright meteors can certainly be seen from towns and cities, but light pollution hides a huge number of the fainter ones. If you can get away from streetlights and urban glow, your chances improve dramatically.
That could mean heading into open countryside, finding a quiet hill, visiting a Dark Sky location, walking out onto the moors, sitting beside a reservoir or spending the evening somewhere along a remote stretch of coastline.
For me, this is where astronomy and outdoor adventure fit together beautifully.
You don’t have to treat this like a scientific expedition.
Turn it into a night out.
Go somewhere you already enjoy walking. Arrive while there is still daylight and give yourself time to explore the area safely. Watch the landscape change as the Sun goes down. Listen to the countryside slowly becoming quieter. Watch the first stars appear, then the next, and then suddenly realise that the whole sky has changed above you.
Eventually a bright streak of light appears.
Then perhaps another.
And suddenly you are paying attention to something we normally forget is even there.
We spend an extraordinary amount of our lives staring at things that are only a few centimetres or metres in front of us — phones, laptops, televisions, dashboards, walls.
Every now and again it is worth looking considerably farther.
What I Would Take for a Night Like This
You really don’t need much equipment, but sitting outside for several hours is very different from walking for several hours. Once you stop moving, even an August night can become surprisingly cold, especially on exposed hills and moorland.
I would take an extra warm layer even if the evening feels comfortable when you leave home. A waterproof jacket is also worth carrying because, well, this is Britain and we all know how that story normally ends.
Something comfortable to sit or lie on makes a huge difference too. A camping mat, blanket or reclining chair will save your neck after an hour of staring upwards.
Then comes one of the most important pieces of outdoor equipment ever invented: the flask.
Tea, coffee, hot chocolate — whatever keeps you happy at one o’clock in the morning while sitting on a hillside wondering why you thought this was a good idea.
A red head torch is useful because red light preserves your night vision much better than bright white light. I would also carry a power bank, especially if I were using my phone for navigation or photography planning, and I would always have an offline map available rather than relying entirely on mobile signal.
None of this needs to turn into a full expedition pack.
The idea is simply to stay warm, comfortable and safe enough that you actually enjoy being there.
Photographing the Perseids
For photographers, the Perseids are also a great excuse to spend a night experimenting with astrophotography.
Meteor photography requires a little luck because you never know exactly where the next meteor will appear. You can improve your odds, though, by using a wide-angle lens and allowing the camera to take photographs continuously.
A sturdy tripod is essential. From there I would start with the widest aperture the lens can handle well, somewhere around f/1.8 to f/2.8 if possible, and then experiment with exposures of roughly ten to twenty seconds. ISO will depend on the camera and the amount of surrounding light, but something between ISO 1600 and 6400 gives you a reasonable starting point.
Manual focus is important. Autofocus tends to become rather confused when presented with an almost completely black sky, so focus carefully on a bright star, zoom into the image to check sharpness and then leave the lens alone.
After that, let the camera work.
An interval timer or remote shutter release is incredibly useful because trying to predict when and where a meteor will appear is an excellent way to drive yourself mad.
But I wouldn’t concentrate only on the sky.
Some of the best astrophotography images work because of the landscape beneath it. A meteor above a mountain ridge, an old stone wall, a lone tree, a tent, an interesting rock formation or a distant village tells far more of a story than a random streak across a black frame.
That is why I always prefer scouting locations while there is still daylight.
Look for your foreground.
Think about the direction of the sky.
Work out where you want to stand.
And most importantly, make sure you understand the terrain before trying to navigate it in complete darkness at two in the morning.
Everything looks different at night.
Usually larger, steeper and considerably more inconvenient.
Watching Something Humans Have Watched for Centuries
One of the things I find fascinating about astronomical events is the connection they create with people who were here long before us.
Humans have watched meteor showers for centuries. Long before anyone understood comets, orbital paths or atmospheric entry, people saw these same streaks of light crossing the night sky.
Today we know that the Perseids are linked to Comet Swift-Tuttle and that Earth passes through the comet’s debris trail every year. Science allows us to predict when the shower will return, where the radiant will be and why those tiny fragments become so bright when they enter the atmosphere.
But imagine watching the same spectacle hundreds or thousands of years ago.
No streetlights.
No aircraft.
No satellites.
No illuminated screens.
Just a dark landscape stretching towards the horizon and a sky considerably richer in stars than most of us ever see today.
We understand the universe better than our ancestors did.
But I sometimes wonder whether they were better at simply stopping long enough to notice it.
Don’t Give Up if the Weather Goes Wrong
Of course, there is one element no astronomer, photographer or adventure blogger can control.
The clouds.
The Perseids may have excellent conditions in 2026, but excellent astronomical conditions mean very little if a thick blanket of British cloud is sitting between you and the universe.
Fortunately, meteor showers don’t appear for one night and then simply disappear.
The Perseids remain active for weeks around their peak, so if 12 August turns into a complete washout, keep checking the weather on the surrounding nights.
You might see fewer meteors, but it only takes one bright fireball travelling halfway across the sky to make the whole evening worthwhile.
And perhaps that is the best approach to nights like this anyway.
Don’t turn it into a competition.
You don’t need to count a hundred meteors.
You don’t need the perfect photograph.
You don’t need to post proof that you were there.
Sometimes sitting somewhere quiet, drinking coffee and watching one brilliant meteor burn across a completely dark sky is enough.
Save the Night
So if the weather looks promising on 12 August, save the evening.
Find somewhere away from the city.
Arrive before sunset.
Using proper eye protection, watch the partial eclipse slowly change the evening Sun.
Then stay.
Watch daylight disappear from the landscape. Let the stars take over and allow your eyes to become accustomed to the darkness.
And then simply look up.
The fragments creating the Perseids have been travelling around our Solar System for longer than any of us have been alive, and they will continue their journey long after we are gone.
For a few hours in August, we just happen to have a front-row seat.

For the UK, roughly midnight until 5:30am offers excellent conditions, with activity generally improving as the radiant climbs higher.
No. Your naked eyes are better because meteors can cross a huge area of sky.
The International Meteor Organization lists a traditional Zenithal Hourly Rate around 100, while the Royal Observatory Greenwich lists a possible peak rate as high as 150 meteors per hour. These are idealised rates; the number you personally see will depend on light pollution, clouds, visibility and observing conditions.

Use Expert RAW → Astrophotography Mode, mount your phone on a tripod, set a 20–30 second exposure, ISO 1600–6400, and manual focus to infinity.

Learn to:
Find dark skies.
Use manual focus and exposure.
Keep steady with a tripod.
Learn the sky using apps.
Then, expand into DSLR gear once you understand light, timing, and patience.
